Located within the Okuda Genso Sayume Art Museum, Yoshoku Kobo is an ideal place to grab lunch while admiring Miyoshi’s local art scene, but this little restaurant isn’t just any old museum cafeteria. Popular with sightseeing travelers and locals alike, customers come to Yoshoku Kobo for the atmosphere, the elegantly plated sweets, and most of all, the beef stew.

Yoshoku Kobo is in a unique location, attached to an art museum but simultaneously tucked away and surrounded by the garden’s greenery, which brightens the restaurant through a wall of floor-to-ceiling windows. According to restaurant staff, every once in a while a local Miyoshi resident will still stumble upon the restaurant for the first time, surprised to find this little oasis despite Yoshoku Kobo’s history of over a decade in this spot. But the restaurant has gained a following since opening here, thanks in large part to their popular beef stew.

The recipe involves simmering beef for hours on end, allowing the once tough cuts of meat to transform into tender morsels that melt in the mouth, served with a selection of colorful vegetables in a rich, savory sauce. The stew has become such a hit with the people of Miyoshi that Yoshoku Kobo has started offering versions made with beef cheek, tongue, and tail as well as the classic beef shank, giving diners a variety of crowd-pleasing options.

In addition to Yoshoku Kobo’s signature stews, the restaurant also serves full lunch sets and dinners featuring mains like grilled chicken or seafood, a regularly changing menu of seasonal dishes, and sophisticated sweets that are perfect for an afternoon break. After strolling through the museum’s many galleries, Yoshoku Kobo is a great spot for lunch, a little pick me up, or for a more luxurious afternoon tea. Restaurant staff decorate the restaurant with flowers both fresh and dried each day, and with the greenery in the window, Yoshoku Kobo feels like a secret garden.
