"Watanabe Seishindo" has been making Japanese sweets that are loved by locals since the Meiji era. This shop, "Fuukisha shouhei Honke," is located in a Renaissance-style building on a cobblestone street in Miyoshicho. The shop has a long history and committed to using local ingredients from northeastern Hiroshima since its inception, offering a taste of the region that can only be found there.
Simple yet gorgeous
Drawn to Japanese Sweets.
The chief, Sakai told us, “While I like how pretty western sweets are, I really enjoy the elegant shape and refreshing sensation you get from Japanese sweets, I like things that are simple and gorgeous.” When a new ingredient is being fashioned into a sweet he told us that they spend up to half a year before a satisfactory product is developed. They consider their collection of over 50 kinds of seasonal sweets, their soft dorayaki, refined texture of red bean paste and the refreshing sweetness to be their strongest products. However the chief is always on the lookout for flower-like sweets.

The sweets shop living on,
In the people of Miyoshi.
They’ve been making their “Awayuki Manju” and “Walnut Mochi” with the same method since the company was first founded in the Meiji era, 1907. Many people visiting the shop have been visiting the shop for decades for the consistency of its taste, saying, “They’re the exact same sweets I ate when I was child.”
Hiroshima’s Bihoku Region,
Full of delicious ingredients.
They also go out of their way to use only seasonal ingredients, the sweets they have available for sale have variations depending on the season. The start of each season sees a change in the products available for sale and with the end a switch to the next season’s goods, once the sweets rotate out customers feel like, “Ah, the season is already changed.” Sweets that inform you when the season changes.
