From the very first step into the store you will be struck by the appearance of a modern Japanese shop that melds well with the townscape of Miyoshicho. Inside there are large showcases featuring many tin toys that unconsciously draw you in. It’s both a tin toy museum and restaurant, “Cafe Felice,” it’s a place filled with a sense of happiness and satisfaction, a must visit location on the Miyoshi main street.

A place where you can enjoy elegant Italian food while surrounded by tin toys with a view of a vibrant garden. Is there any more extravagant time to enjoy a few drinks? The seasonal pasta and vegetables are all fresh, delicious and safe ordered from a company called “Magoyasai” in Akitakata City. The bacon is handmade by Felice and their custom coffee blend is provided by local independent coffee roaster, Acorns.

The toys the owner has been collecting for over 20 years include more than 300 miscellaneous tin toys and more than a 1,000 Glico (Japanese food company) toys that were included in meals. There are toys from all over including toys “Made in occupied Japan” of the 50’s and 60’s as well as some made in the UK, Italy, Russia, the US and Germany. You can really appreciate the feel of each era in the toys. The owner told us, “Having only 1 or 2 of these toys means someday you’ll throw them away. If you collect a lot though you’ll feel more like protecting the history and value of them. I want to be able to communicate and show how an era was to people through the toys of that time.” he told us this with the smile of a young boy, his joy being very apparent.

Since the owner, Utsuda, lived in Miyoshicho all the way from elementary to high school he opened the museum and cafe after thinking about how he could contribute to the town. Beyond that he also has a dream of opening galleries, restaurants and private lodging using old town houses around town. It’s a lofty goal with a clear passion for the town, surely, a person to keep an eye on as he continues to make Miyoshicho more and more lively.
